Google could preview the new Andromeda project

Google is set to officially announce two new smartphones on October 4, and the company even released video advertisements and placed a statue signaling the event in Brooklyn, New York. In addition, the Mountain View-based company recently celebrated 8 years since the first Android OS version was released.

A picture of a cake with references to Android versions was recently posted online by the company. Google's cake included marshmallows, jelly beans, nougat, lollipops and other treats, making for a neat way to celebrate eight years of Android OS.

In addition, Hiroshi Lockheimer, SVP at Android, Chrome OS and Google Play, took to his Twitter account to build up hype around the October 4 event. He suggests that the day will have historic significance for Google, saying that it could be as important as the day when the world’s most popular operating system, Android OS, was released.

Google is working on merging Android with Chrome OS

The fact that Google rebranded the upcoming Nexus smartphones to Pixel and Pixel XL is quite important, considering that the company will be more involved with the style and the software inside the new phones. For those who don't know, Google is developing the new Pixel phones in partnership with HTC.

However, Lockheimer might be referring to something else in his tweet. Google is expected to tease the Andromeda project, which is a merger between Android and Chrome OS, according to Android Police. The information should be taken with a grain of salt, though, since the tweet doesn’t specifically say anything about Andromeda.

Rumors on such a project started appearing nearly a year ago when it was said that Google would release Andromeda in 2017, but we could see a glimpse of it in 2016. Since the year is almost over, the October 4 event could offer a good opportunity for Google to introduce the new OS to the world.

The new operating system would be made available on laptops and 2-in-1 devices. Andromeda is said to provide a way for users to interact with Android from their phones to laptops and even desktops.
