Google constantly brings new features and tools to users of its social communication apps, Allo and Duo. The two applications recently received updates with audio-only calls and file sharing options, but that’s not all that Google has been working on.

A recent rumor says that Google might be planning to introduce a new social app that allows small groups of users to edit pictures together and organize them in multiple ways. It’s a combination between Snapchat filters and advanced imaging features.

Google has apparently confirmed that it is working on such an app, but says that it’s currently an experiment. There’s no guarantee that the app will eventually make it to the Play store and that users of Android-running smartphones will be able to check it out.

Collaborative social photo app

The report reveals that Google plans to introduce the new app during Google I/O this year, but the company is still undecided upon the app’s name. Apparently, the new app will be a competitor to Path and allow users to create groups for sharing pictures and editing them. It would be some sort of a collaborative social photo app that combines features for identifying objects in a photo, organizing them and applying filters.

Path is an application for providing small groups of friends the means to share pictures and chat. Google was at one point interested in buying Path, but it was eventually sold to Korean messaging giant Kakao in 2015.

While Google constantly updates and promotes Allo and Duo, the two apps didn’t do so well among consumers, despite Allo receiving integration with Google Assistant. Google is facing fierce competition from other giants like Facebook and Snapchat, while YouTube remains the social giant’s most successful social endeavor. Still, Google did attract users in the business field with its G Suite apps, which offer plenty of tools for co-workers to collaborate on projects and record their progress.
