Google already started working on the Pixel 2

Reports about the upcoming Pixel smartphone have already started surfacing, although the phone is expected to arrive sometime in October. Google has started working on the next Pixel phone and a recent report says that it might not have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

An internal Google document was seen by 9to5Google and it suggested that the tech company might ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack on new Pixel smartphones. The actual documentation wasn’t shared and, at this point, there aren’t any other reports suggesting the same move, so take this information with a grain of salt.

The removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack would certainly be a bold move for Google, especially since the company highlighted the feature on Pixel and Pixel XL phones over Apple’s iPhone 7 offerings from last year.

Pixel 2 will remain a premium smartphone

Apple’s decision to remove the 3.5mm jack was criticized by some, but recent financial reports have shown that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were well received on the market, despite the fact that AirPods did record some delays at launch.

If Google indeed ditches the 3.5mm jack, then the company would have to offer wireless headphones or find an alternative for consumers.

Other recent reports say that Pixel 2 will come with waterproof certification, a feature that many Pixel owners would have wanted to have on their smartphones. In addition, Google has started testing multiple Pixel 2 models with a variety of chipsets, including Snapdragon 83X and Intel chips. At some point, the company even tested MediaTek chips, but has apparently decided not to go with such processors.

The Pixel 2 might not see an increased MP size in the rear camera, but rather compensate with extra features. Pixel and Pixel XL phones released last year had some of the best cameras on a smartphone, being one of the main selling points for the two phones.
