The update also works with Marshmallow and Lollipop

Android N Developer Preview 3 came with a small but very nice surprise. Google Keyboard v5.1 now has some customization features that users will really enjoy. Now, you can customize your keyboards with pre-configured themes or pick from personal pictures that you can set in the background.

Users simply need to install the latest version of Google Keyboard, and they will get access to a new ‘Themes’ menu that they can check out. It comes with some pre-defined themes that they can apply, including an AMOLED one.

However, the coolest thing is that users can now search for various pictures stored on their device and apply them in the background of the keyboard. The level of transparency can be adjusted. Google’s latest update to the keyboard also allows users to crop images and select only a certain portion to add in the background. Key border can be enabled, and that it makes it easier to differentiate between keys.

It should work on Lollipop and Marshmallow as well

The latest version of Google Keyboard rolled out along with the beta-level release of the Android N developer preview 3. Users who own Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 9, Nexus 6, Nexus Player, Pixel C, or the General Mobile 4G Android One device can join the Android N Beta program and try out the pre-release version of Android OS.

Google’s update to 5.1 was quite surprising, considering that only a few weeks ago the company rolled out the latest Google Keyboard version 5.0 at the time, which included improved gesture toggles and increased backspace functionality.

It’s not a unique idea, seeing as third-party keyboard applications like SwiftKey have been using themes and customization options heavily for quite a while now.

Still, what’s nice is that Google Keyboard v5.1 also runs Android Lollipop and Marshmallow, and the APK is available on APK Mirror.
