More than three years ago, Alphabet, a parent company of Google, teased the world with a pair of futuristic glasses, which promised to be the next wearable that everyone would use to take pictures, find locations on a map, search the Web, etc.

Google Glass was supposed to save us a lot of time and money, though the first units were sold for as high as $1,500 USD, by allowing us to do a lot of things that we normally do with our other smart devices, but in a much easier manner as you would only have to talk to the device directly. These were called Glass Explorer Edition.

Many have thought that Google Glass is dead, but it turns out it isn't, at least not in the enterprise world, as Google officially announced today the Glass Enterprise Edition, a version that aims to breathe new life into factories and other business where there's need for such a device, according to a report from the Wired.

Google Glass 2.0 now used across many factories in the US

It turns out Google's Glass team did a lot of upgrades to the initial Glass Explorer Edition models that were sold to the public up until a few years ago, and the second iteration promises to be a major overhall that's already being deployed and used across many factories in the United States.

Google Glass Enterprise Edition is currently being used by workers at Boeing, DHL, GE, NSF International, Dignity Health, and Volkswagen, as well as a lots of other startups like Upskill, a leader in wearable solutions, and even AGCO, a $7 billion company that produces big farm equipment, such as sprayers and tractors.

"It looks very similar to original Glass but improves on every aspect of it," said Brian Ballard, Upskill CEO. "They had seen how we were using it, and rethought everything—how you charge it, fold it up, prevent sweating, wifi coverage. [...] For our market we desperately needed a product with a brand like Google behind it."

As for the technical specs, the report said that Google Glass Enterprise Edition features a better 8MP camera, faster Wi-Fi, extended battery life, a new red LED that turns on when the user wants to record a video, and a modular design that allows it to be detached and reattached to other Glass-compatible frames.
