Citrix app can bring Win32 apps on Windows 10 S

Google is one of the few big companies that didn’t launch their apps on Windows 10, even though there’s clearly demand for Windows Store versions of Google Chrome, Gmail, or other similar apps.

And while Google’s decision to stay away from Windows 10 might be related to the restrictions impacting browsers published in the Windows Store, it looks like Google Chrome might arrive on Windows 10 after all without any help from the search company.

Citrix has launched an application specifically aimed at Windows 10 S, and thus published in the Windows Store, which makes it possible to run Win32 software even if it’s not available in the Store.

Support for any Win32 program

Called Citrix Receiver, this is a universal app, so it runs not only on PCs but also on smartphones and phones, and it even supports Continuum on Windows 10 Mobile. This means that you can run Win32 software in Continuum mode, which basically allows users to launch Google Chrome when working on a bigger screen using their phones to power the system.

“Windows 10 S is a locked-down OS that runs the applications delivered from Windows Store only. This means many existing Win32 apps, which are not moved to the store yet, will not run locally on Windows 10 S,” Citrix said in a blog post today.

“The best way to get access to these business critical Win 32 apps is through Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop. Citrix Receiver opens the door for the Win 32 apps to run on Windows 10 S. This way you can run your business critical apps and also get flexibility to run any other browser like Chrome or other search engine on browser like Google search, adding more value on top of the simple, secure, cost effective characteristics of Windows 10 S.”

Windows 10 S is an operating system specifically aimed at the education market, and it’s restricted to apps published in the Windows Store. This means that Win32 software cannot run on this OS version unless it’s published in the Store and ported with Project Centennial.
