Only two days after the promotion of the Google Chrome 47 web browser to the stable channel for all supported operating systems, including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, Android, and Chrome OS, Google announces today that Chrome 48 is in the Beta channel for all the platforms mentioned above.

Among the new features implemented in the Google Chrome 48 Beta web browser, worth paying attention to are the following: the addition of a Presentation API (Applications Programming Interface) that makes it possible for mobile websites to present content to nearby Google Cast devices using the Cast Web SDK (Software Development Kit), and support for adding custom buttons for the push notification functionality introduced in Chrome 42.

The custom buttons on notifications can be added by various website, allowing users to complete several tasks within the respective notification. At the moment of writing this article, Google brags about the fact that the Chrome web browser is now capable of delivering over 350 million push notifications each and every single day on all supported operating systems.

"The Chrome team is excited to announce the promotion of Chrome 48 to the beta channel for Windows, Mac and Linux. Chrome 48.0.2564.23 contains our usual under-the-hood performance and stability tweaks, but there are also some cool new features to explore," says Krishna Govind in the release announcement for Google Chrome 48.

Automatic detection of maximum Internet connection speed

Another interesting feature implemented in the Google Chrome 48 Beta web browser is the ability to detect the maximum Internet connection speed for mobile devices via the recently introduced NetworkInformation.downlinkMax function, which application developers can now implement in their projects to automatically detect the device's maximum bandwidth.

But that's not all because Google Chrome 48.0.2564.23 Beta also adds support for the VP9 video codec in WebRTC, makes the use of FontFaceSet more flexible for websites, implements a new DevTools security panel for developers, adds support for shortening and simplifying the Web Audio JavaScript syntax, and much more.
