Focus will be switched to Android and iOS, Evernote says

Evernote joins the growing club of developers abandoning Windows phones, as the company has decided to give up on the platform and focus on projects that make more sense, such as iOS and Android.

Evernote explains its decision to pull its app from Windows phones by emphasizing that the company needs to stay focused on the top projects, including Evernote Web, Evernote for Android, Windows, Mac, and iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

“Staying focused often means letting go. As of June 29, 2017, we’ll be discontinuing support for BlackBerry and Windows Phone. If you currently use Evernote on these platforms, you may continue to do so. Evernote, however, will no longer be available for download on these devices and we won’t be making any further updates,” Evernote says.

Switch to Android and iOS

So starting this Thursday, the download links for Windows phones will no longer work and the app won’t show up in Store searches. The existing installs should continue running normally, but given that no updates would be provided, users will miss out on all the new features and improvements coming to all the other platforms.

Evernote says that anyone can continue accessing notes and notebooks if they switch to a supported platform, and the easiest way to do it is on Windows desktop with a browser. Of course, there’s also the option to switch to Android or iOS if you are willing to do this, but for the most hardcore Windows phone users, this is something that’s out of the question for the time being.

On the good side, there are several alternatives to Evernote right now on Windows phones, and without a doubt the most popular is Microsoft’s own OneNote that’s available across a wide array of platforms.

OneNote is getting better with every update and there’s obviously no plan to remove it from Windows phones, though that wouldn’t be surprising at all given Microsoft dropping interest for its own mobile ecosystem.
