On November 9, 2016, GoboLinux developer Lucas C. Villa Real happily announced the release of the Beta milestone of the upcoming GoboLinux 016 Linux-based computer operating system.

GoboLinux 016 Beta comes exactly one month after the release of the Alpha snapshot from the new development series, and it looks like it adds a large number of improvements in many areas, including the kernel, which got updated with support for generic 64-bit (x86_64) processors.

"I'm happy to announce the release of the second preview of GoboLinux 016 for x86-64. Thanks to your feedback, we have made this snapshot more smooth and robust. Again, we appreciate your testing of 016 beta. We're hoping to have 016 final very soon," wrote Lucas C. Villa Real in the release announcement.

Here's what's new in GoboLinux 016 Beta

GoboLinux 016 Beta adds new features and significant improvements to the Runner component for /System/Index virtualization, updates the GoboHide utility with major bug fixes and support for generic netlink sockets, improves the installer to support MacBook computers, and enhances the Live ISO image with better USB booting.

Additionally, the client timeout was increased for DHCP in the Live CD, obsolete .desktop links have been removed from the desktop, missing Python files were added, the Mozilla Firefox web browser has been updated to improve the page rendering, and GoboLinux now tries to autoconnect to known Wi-Fi networks during login.

The list of changes continues with an updated graphics stack that now automatically applies the configured keyboard layout during boot to the desktop environment, support for the installer to remove the install partition from the list of possible bootloader targets, and a significant reduction in the size of the ISO image.

Last but not least, several of the pre-installed applications and core components received new versions. Among these, we can mention GIMP, GoboNet, X.Org Server, and CUPS. The Dit editor has been added as well, and some post-install fixes were applied. Download GoboLinux 016 Beta right now from our website if you want to test the distro.
