14 DAY TRIAL // GoboLinux developer Lucas Correia Villa Real has had the great pleasure of announcing the release of the final GoboLinux 016 operating system, an independently-developed GNU/Linux distribution that uses a custom file system hierarchy.
Shipping with the minimalist Awesome window manager as default desktop environment, GoboLinux 016 arrives two and a half years after the previous version in an attempt to make the computer operating system simpler and more functional than before by implementing various innovative, un-Unix-like technologies.
According to the release notes, it appears that GoboLinux 016 is a major release featuring numerous in-house built tools and core components, including its own container-free filesystem virtualization called Runner, as well as its own daemon-free network manager called GoboNet.
"From day one, GoboLinux has always supported keeping multiple versions of a program installed on disk at the same time, but when two versions had conflicts, you had to choose which one would be activated in the system as the default. With Runner, you don't need to worry about which version of a given dependency is currently linked (or activated) in /System/Index," explained the developers.
Custom Awesome widgets now integrated into GoboLinux
As mentioned before, GoboLinux stays true to being a lightweight operating system shipping with the Awesome window manager, and the latest version integrates custom widgets for Wi-Fi, which makes use of GoboNet, for your laptop's battery, checking the sysfs file system, as well as for audio, designed to launch AlsaMixer in a transient frameless terminal emulator that users can control via either mouse or keyboard.
GoboLinux 016 improves many aspects of the independently-developed distro, including the live environment, graphical installer, and hardware detection.
