Today, November 26, the GNOME developers behind the Tracker open-source semantic data store software, which is responsible for indexing various sources needed for the search engine of the GNOME desktop environment, have announced two new releases.

Tracker 1.6, the latest stable branch, has received its first maintenance release, version 1.6.1, which updates the tracker tool with better UID (User ID) detection, improves the documentation for the libtracker-control component, and fixes the photo orientation extraction for the TIFF and XMP formats in the tracker-extract component.

Moreover, Tracker 1.6.1 addresses a buffer overrun in libtracker-common's libunistring-based unaccenting, repairs an issue with the cancellation of tasks that occurred during the destruction of TrackerFileNotifier for the libtracker-miner component, for which it adds support for handling TrackerSparqlConnection failures.

What's new in Tracker 1.7.0

The next major version of the Tracker search engine is now in development for the upcoming GNOME 3.20 desktop environment, due for release on March 23, 2015, with version 1.7.0 out the door on the same day as the release of Tracker 1.6.1, bringing the same changes noted above, as well as several other interesting improvements.

Among them, we can mention support for the CONCAT, LCASE/UCASE, CEIL/FLOOR, ROUND, STRSTARTS/STRENDS, CONTAINS, STRBEFORE/STRAFTER, STRLEN, ENCODE_FOR_URI, YEAR/MONTH/DAY/HOUR/MINUTES/SECONDS, SUBSTR, ABS, and MD5/SHA1/SHA256/SHA512 functions for Sparql 1.1 in the libtracker-data component.

Moreover, the libtracker-data, libtracker-extract, and libtracker-miner have been partially ported to GTask, multiple issues have been resolved for functional tests, and previous data deletion on file updates is now moved to TrackerMinerFS implementations for the libtracker-miner component.

Both versions are available for download right now from Softpedia and will be distributed as part of the forthcoming GNOME 3.19.2 development release later this month. Several language translations have also been updated in both Tracker releases. Please try to keep in mind that Tracker 1.7.0 is a pre-release version, not suitable for production use.
