The Mutter composite and window manager of the widely-used GNOME desktop environment was updated recently both on the stable and devel channels with a bunch of new features and improvements.

Mutter 3.24.4 is now the latest stable build of the application, and it's here to add a few important changes for tablets, including improved stability of tablet plugs and unplugs, working window moving and resizing via tablet tools, as well as the implementation of tablet rings/strips configuration.

In addition, Mutter now no longer throttles motion events on tablet tools, it's capable of handling the left-handed mode on pen/eraser devices, and adds support for tablet wheel events when running under the Wayland display server. Talking about Wayland, the Wacom cursor offset should now work as expected in Mutter 3.24.4.

Several other miscellaneous bugs were fixed in this new stable release of Mutter, along with two crashes that occurred when attempting to decrease the number of workspaces on the GNOME desktop environment, and when attempting to move across on-adjacent monitors. Also, the Canadian translation was updated.

Fractional monitor scaling support is coming to Mutter 3.26

On the other hand, Mutter 3.25.4 is out as part of the GNOME 3.25.4 desktop environment release for the GNOME 3.26 development cycle, and it also comes with many of the tablet improvements that were implemented in the stable branch, as well as support for the wl_surface.damage_buffer() function and support for fractional monitor scaling.

Other than that, Mutter 3.25.4 adopts the g-s-d xrandr functionality and keeps override-redirect windows stacked on top. Of course, lots of other minor issues were resolved, and you can download both Mutter 3.25.4 and Mutter 3.24.4 source tarballs right now through our web portal if you want to install them on your GNU/Linux OS. Mutter 3.24.4 is a recommended update for all stable users.
