On June 12, Aurimas Cernius announced the immediate availability for download of the second point release of the stable Gnote 3.16 note-taking application for the GNOME 3.16 desktop environment, as well as the first snapshot of the upcoming Gnote 3.18 app.

Dubbed "Imitation is the sincerest form of plagiarism," Gnote 3.16.2 is a very small maintenance release that only fixes a crash that occurred when the DESKTOP_SESSION environment variable was not set, and a crash that occurred when quitting the application.

Additionally, Gnote 3.16.2 adds support for the Occitan language, and updates the German and Swedish translations. On the other hand, the Gnote 3.17.0 unstable release, which is the first in the Gnote 3.18 development cycle, adds configuration support when using CSD (Client Side Decorations).

The gnome-common package will no longer be required in Gnote 3.18, and it is now possible to ident selected lines on tab. Moreover, identation won't be lost on the first item when identing is being doubled.

As expected, the same two crashes that have been patched in the Gnote 3.16.2 maintenance release and detailed above have also been addressed in the Gnote 3.17.0 unstable version. Also, there's support for the Occitan language in Gnote 3.17.0 too.

Gnote 3.18 will be distributed as part of GNOME 3.18

In addition to the new features and bugfixes mentioned above, Gnote 3.17.0 updates the Catalan, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Spanish, and Swedish languages, as well as the Spanish and German manuals. As expected, Gnote 3.18 will be distributed as part of the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment later this year.

In the meantime, you can download the Gnote 3.17.0 application right now from Softpedia and take it for a test drive, but please try to keep in mind that it is a pre-release version and it's not suitable for production environments. Users of Gnote 3.16 are also urged to update to Gnote 3.16.2 as soon as possible.
