The GNOME developers are hard at work these days as they're preparing to release the first maintenance version of the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment, GNOME 3.18.1. As part of this point release, the Cheese webcam viewer app has been updated too.

According to the internal changelog, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, Cheese 3.18.1 is a bugfix release that addresses the video preview scaling and resizing functionality, allowing it to be expanded and set to a decent minimum width and height.

Moreover, the application is now capable of setting a minimum effect actor size, which lets the effects previews be expanded along with the size of the apps' window. Various stray references to the ClutterTexture module have been replaced as well, fixing the rendering of effects previews.

Cheese 3.18.1 is not a perfect release, which means that it still has some quirks here and there, such as the incorrect size of the effects previews, despite the fact that the ClutterTexture references have been replaced. A bug has been submitted by now, and the issue should be patched in the next maintenance release.

Several language translations have been updated

Last but not least, several language translations were updated in this new maintenance version of the open-source Cheese webcam viewer software, including Argentinian, German, Spanish, Finnish, Italian, Korean, Vietnamese, and Esperanto. Also, the German desktop file translation was fixed, and the Korean documentation has been updated.

As usual, you can download the Cheese 3.18.1 sources right now from Softpedia, but it is recommended to wait for your operating system's maintainers to update the Cheese packages to the latest version available at the moment of writing this article. Cheese 3.18.1 should be released as part of the GNOME 3.18.1 desktop environment, which will hit the streets in the coming days.
