Improves overview grids and thumbnails for photos

GNOME Photos developer Debarshi Ray announced today the availability of the GNOME Photos 3.24 major release of the open-source image viewer with basic editing features for the soon-to-be-released GNOME 3.24 desktop environment.

The GNOME Project will launch tomorrow, March 22, 2017, the final release of the long-anticipated GNOME 3.24 desktop, a massive update that improves all the applications and core components that are usually shipped with the GNOME Stack, including the GNOME Photos app.

However, the GNOME Photos developer wanted to give us a heads up on the new features coming in the 3.24 release, so he wrote an introductory blog post where he explained how the overview grids and photo thumbnails inside them needed an overhaul.

"Their inability to reflow the thumbnails leads to an ugly vertical gutter of empty space unless the window is just the right size. The other problem was performance," explains the developer. "The end goal was to use a GtkFlowBox-based grid, but it involved a lot more work than replacing one user interface component with another."

GNOME Photos 3.24 clones Darktable's exposure and blacks adjustment tool

Another interesting feature implemented in the GNOME Photos 3.24 release is a clone of the exposure and blacks adjustment tool that you can find in the popular Darktable RAW image editor application. To imitate the tool, the developer had to fix the gegl:exposure component at this year’s WilberWeek, an annual event for the GIMP and GEGL communities.

GNOME Photos 3.24 is available for download right now on our website if you want to compile and install it on your favorite GNU/Linux distribution, but will be officially available starting tomorrow as part of the launch of the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment, which will land in the stable repositories of your OS in the coming weeks.
