To celebrate GNOME 3.22's launch, Uwe Scholz, developer of the open-source GNOME Commander two-pane graphical file manager designed for the GNOME desktop environment, announced today, October 4, 2016, the release of GNOME Commander 1.6.0.

GNOME Commander 1.6.0 is a major update to the file manager application engineered to look and feel like the popular Total Commander software for Microsoft Windows operating systems, and it brings a large number of new features, under-the-hood improvements, as well as dozens of bug fixes and updated translations.

Prominent new features of GNOME Commander 1.6.0 include the availability of a configurable command that lets users send files to a certain app, support for displaying notification icons in the "Open With" popup menu, as well as the ability to add more than one file simultaneously when using the "Edit files" button.

Moreover, the device list entries and buttons have been updated to act as "home buttons" for the respective device, it's possible to copy the path of a directory to clipboard immediately after right-clicking on dir-indicator, as well as use a keyboard shortcut for displaying or hiding the main menu.

The file context menu now features a simple plugin system

The list of new features continues with the implementation of a new, simple plugin system for the file context menu, support for writing the changes to bookmarks to a local file immediately, along with the ability to sync all bookmarks between instances of GNOME Commander.

There's also a new color theme called "Winter," support for storing favorite apps and devices within the GKeyFile format, support for reopening the same options dialog tab that was previously closed in the current GNOME Commander session, and support for storing options in the dconf database instead of the regular gnome-config file.

Last but not least, GNOME Commander 1.6.0 updates the File Roller plugin to use prefix patterns when attempting to generate an archive's name. The "Open folder" command has been removed from the user actions and popup menu, Samba support is now optional, and Google's test framework is now used for unit tests.

Lots of new and updated language and documentation translations are also available in the GNOME Commander 1.6.0 release, along with many bug fixes, which you can view in the changelog attached below. In the meantime, you can download GNOME Commander 1.6.0 right now via our website.
