14 DAY TRIAL // Now that we've told you all about the goodies coming to the GNOME Shell user interface when the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment is released next month on March 22, it's time to see what improvements landed for the Mutter window manager.
We believe that Mutter is the second most important component of the open-source GNOME desktop environment, and the upcoming major release got a first Beta milestone the other day, bringing us a bunch of interesting improvements. Among these, there's better EGLStream support, along with HiDPI support for the window menu placement.
The right scale is now set for tablet tool cursors on HiDPI (High Dots Per Inch) displays, and it looks like the low-level monitor configuration was migrated into Mutter. Moreover, on-screen display (OSD) will be shown on tablet mode switches and all the Mutter libraries can now be installed in parallel.
Mutter 3.24 Beta is now ready for public testing
As mentioned before, a first Beta of the Mutter 3.24 window manager is now ready for public testing, and according to the internal changelog attached at the end of the article for your reading pleasure, a bunch of important bugs have been patched, and several language translations updated.
Mutter 3.24 Beta is available as part of the first Beta release of the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment if you want to take it for a test drive, and you can also download the source tarball right now from our website if you fancy compiling software from sources. However, please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version.
There will be another Beta released on the first day of March, and the Release Candidate (RC) version is coming March 15. However, GNOME 3.24 is now in Feature Freeze stage, so we don't expect to see any major new features coming with these development builds. We'll keep you updated if anything changes.
