With a one-day delay, the GNOME Project, through Matthias Clasen, was proud to announce the release and immediate availability for download of the second and last Beta of the forthcoming GNOME 3.24 desktop environment.

GNOME 3.24 Beta 2 arrives only two weeks after the first Beta release, and brings with it numerous updated core components and applications that are usually shipped under the GNOME Stack umbrella. The technical version number is GNOME 3.23.91 and can be downloaded from the usual places by early adopters and public beta testers.

"GNOME 3.23.91 is now available. This is our second Beta release on the way to 3.24. Please try it and let us know how well it works for you," said Matthias Clasen. "With the second Beta our Freeze continues and deepens. [...] As always, you can request a freeze break if you think your change should be committed before 3.24."

GNOME 3.24 Release Candidate to land March 15, 2017

In approximately two weeks from the moment of writing this article, the GNOME developers will announce the availability of the Release Candidate (RC) build of the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment, which should also mark the Hard Code Freeze development stage, where no code changes will be made without approval.

Later this month, on March 20, the Hard Code Freeze period will end, and the GNOME developers will push most of the GNOME 3.24 packages to the FTP servers. The final release of the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment will be officially announced on March 22, 2017, but it will take up to two-three weeks to land on your distro's repositories.

Until then, you can download and compile the GNOME 3.24 Beta 2 release by using the jhbuild modulesets published at https://developer.gnome.org/jhbuild/stable/ and http://download.gnome.org/teams/releng/3.23.91/. And you can also view the CORE NEWS and APPS NEWS files to see what's new.
