Softpedia was informed today, October 4, 2016, via an email announcement, by Andre Klapper from the GNOME Project about the availability of the official release schedule for the upcoming GNOME 3.24 desktop environment.

That's right, while some of you are already enjoying the recently released GNOME 3.22 desktop environment, or waiting impatiently for it to land in the stable software repositories of their favorite GNU/Linux distributions, the GNOME development team is hard at work again on the next major release, GNOME 3.24.

The development cycle of the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment will be taking place under the 3.23.x umbrella until its final release on March 22, 2017, and according to the release schedule, the first public snapshot, namely GNOME 3.23.1, should be made available later this month, on October 26, 2016.

After that, the second development snapshot, GNOME 3.23.2, arrives one month later, on November 23, followed three weeks later by the third one, GNOME 3.23.3, on December 14, which is also the last released in 2016. In 2017, the development cycle continues with one more snapshot, GNOME 3.23.4, on January 18.

GNOME 3.24 to be dubbed after GNOME.Asia Summit 2017's host city

The first Beta release of the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment will be seeded to public beta testers on February 15 as build 3.23.90, and will be followed only two weeks later by the second Beta build (technical version number is 3.23.91) on the first day of March 2017. The Release Candidate (version 3.23.92) will see the light of day on March 15.

GNOME 3.24 desktop environment will be officially unveiled on March 22, 2017, and the first point release, GNOME 3.24.1, arrives on April 12. GNOME 3.24 will be dubbed after the host city of the upcoming GNOME.Asia Summit 2017 event that should take place in spring next year, so we'll publish a new story when everything becomes official.

In the meantime, the GNOME 3.22 desktop environment will receive the usual two point releases that bring various bug fixes and improvements. The first one, GNOME 3.22.1, is about to be released first thing next week, on Monday, October 10, and the second and last one, GNOME 3.22.2, hits the streets on November 9, 2016.

Until then, we believe that more and more GNU/Linux distributions will be shipping the new GNOME 3.22 packages in the stable repositories, including the popular Arch Linux, which usually adds them after the release of the first maintenance update. And, as usual, we'll be covering the entire development cycle of GNOME 3.24 right here on this space.
