Delayed one day, the Release Candidate (RC) build of the forthcoming GNOME 3.22 desktop environment is now available for early adopters and public testers before its final launch next week.

Yes, time flies when you're having fun developing software projects, and today's GNOME 3.22 Release Candidate milestone marks the end of the development cycle of the popular desktop environment for Linux-based operating systems, which took approximately six months, since the March 2016 launch of GNOME 3.20.

"Sorry for the short delay; some modules we wanted to wait for arrived a bit late. So here we are, this is the end of this development cycle and here comes the release candidate for you to download, build, and test," says Javier Jardón. "Enjoy it as fast as you can, the final release is scheduled next Wednesday!"

GNOME 3.22 arrives on September 21 with many new features

In less than one week from today, the GNOME Project will officially announce the general availability of the GNOME 3.22 "Karlsruhe" desktop environment for Linux systems, which will be a great opportunity for the community to see what new features and improvements it introduces.

If you're reading our GNOME-related articles on a regular basis, you should know about some of these new features integrated into many of the GNOME default apps, as we wrote multiple articles about them in the last six months. If not, everything will be revealed to you in an in-depth story next Wednesday, September 21, 2016.

Unfortunately, September 21 is not the day when you'll be able to use the GNOME 3.22 desktop environment on your Linux box, as it will take up to two-three weeks for package maintainers to bring the new GNOME version to the stable channels of your favorite GNU/Linux distribution.

We believe that Arch Linux and OpenSuSE users will be among the first to install GNOME 3.22 in October, so until then, you can compile GNOME 3.22 Release Candidate (technical version number is 3.21.92) using the jhbuild modulesets published today by the GNOME release team.
