On March 22, 2016, GNOME developer Andre Klapper published a draft release schedule for the next major version of the GNOME desktop environment, version 3.22.

The release schedule has been posted a day before the launch of GNOME 3.20, which hit the streets on March 23, as expected, bringing dozens of goodies for fans of the open-source desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating systems. GNOME 3.20 will make its way into the software repositories of various distributions in the coming weeks or months.

And before we give you any details about when GNOME 3.22 will be released and other important dates from its release schedule, we want to mention the fact that it is amazing to see such dedication for an open-source project, as GNOME 3.20 has not even hit the repos of the most popular distros and the team is already planning on the next major version.

Now, according to draft release schedule for GNOME 3.22, it looks like GNOME 3.20 will have a first point release, GNOME 3.20.1, on April 13, and a second point release, GNOME 3.20.2, on May 11, 2016. During this time, the development cycle of GNOME 3.22 will start with the first milestone, GNOME 3.21.1, which should be seeded to testers on April 27.

GNOME 3.22 arrives September 21, 2016

Then, the second milestone, GNOME 3.21.2, will be released on May 25, followed by the third one, GNOME 3.21.3 on June 22, and the fourth one, GNOME 3.21.4 on July 20, 2016. The first Beta build of GNOME 3.22 should be ready for public testing on August 17, right after the annual GUADEC conference, which takes place August 12 – 14 in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Continuing, the second Beta build of GNOME 3.22 is currently scheduled for release on August 31, and the RC (Release Candidate) might land around the date of September 14. The final release of the GNOME 3.22 desktop environment is planned for September 21, 2016, and its first point release, GNOME 3.22.1, for October 12. GNOME 3.22 will be dubbed "Karlsruhe," after the host city of the GUADEC conference.
