14 DAY TRIAL // Now that the GNOME 3.20 desktop environment has been officially released, the time has come for it to land in the software repositories of some of the most popular GNU/Linux distributions.
We've already told you that the latest development versions of the upcoming Parsix GNU/Linux 8.10 and Fedora 24 operating systems offer technical previews of the GNOME 3.20 desktop environment to those brave enough to become early adopters.
And now, we hear that the OpenSuSE Tumbleweed might just become the very first stable Linux kernel-based operating system to feature the final GNOME 3.20 packages in its main software repositories.
"Tumbleweed users might be using the latest GNOME release that has been thoroughly tested by openQA by this evening," says Douglas DeMaio, Senior Consultant, openSUSE Project, in today's announcement.
Yes, you're reading it right. If you're using openSUSE Tumbleweed Linux and GNOME as your default desktop environment, you might want to check the distribution's software repositories later today for a new snapshot that will include GNOME 3.20.
KDE Applications 15.12.3 landed in the Tumbleweed repos
As part of the major GNOME 3.20 update, openSUSE Tumbleweed users will receive today, March 30, there will be a new version of the NetworkManager software, which includes a new feature to determine if you are online, enabled by default.
To determine if an openSUSE Tumbleweed user has connectivity, the network connection manager will try to communicate with the conncheck.opensuse.org server. To disable the feature, you need to remove the NetworkManager-branding-upstream package.
This past week, openSUSE Tumbleweed received some more snapshots, which brought in software updates like the KDE Applications 15.12.3 suite, which includes KDE Development Platform 4.14.18 LTS, as well as zypper 1.13.
