After informing us a few days ago about a new major snapshot for the openSUSE Tumbleweed rolling-release and bleeding-edge GNU/Linux operating system, as well as the availability for download and testing of the RC (Release Candidate) build of the upcoming openSUSE Leap 42.1 distro, Douglas DeMaio announced the release of a new snapshot for Tumbleweed.

According to Mr. DeMaio, OpenSuSE Tumbleweed's new snapshot is very important for fans of the open-source GNOME desktop environment because the GNOME 3.18 release, which was officially announced by the GNOME Project on September 23, 2015, has finally landed in the software repositories of the rolling-release distribution.

"GNOME 3.18 has automatic brightness adjustments for a user’s screen. A progress bar for copying files gives users more awareness about the progress of copying files. Updating device firmware is now easier with 3.18 and there are many more additions," says Douglas DeMaio on behalf of the openSUSE team. "The previous TW snapshot 20151002 had some problems with VirtualBox, but users who booted the old kernel were unaffected."

openSUSE Leap 42.1 coming November 4, 2015

However, GNOME 3.18.1 has been released earlier today, so we should expect another Tumbleweed snapshot pretty soon. Moreover, the latest and most advanced Linux 4.2.3 kernel, the KDE Applications 15.08.2 software suite for the KDE Plasma 5.4.2 desktop environment, and the long-term supported KDE Development Platform 4.14.12 have been added in the October 12 snapshot of openSUSE Tumbleweed.

On the other hand, work continues for the openSUSE Leap 42.1 operating system, which saw a Release Candidate build the other day. A Goldmaster build will be made available internally for testers, and the final release of the distribution will hit the streets on November 4, when the openSUSE developer officially unveil it during the SUSECon event that will take place in Amsterdam, Netherlands, between November 2-6, 2015.
