On July 27, the developers of the famous Git open-source version control system were more than proud to announce the immediate availability for download of version 2.5.0 of Git.

According to the release notes, Git 2.5.0 is a major feature release that includes countless improvements to various areas of the software but also fixes some of the most annoying bugs reported by users since the previous version of the app.

"The latest feature release Git v2.5.0 is now available at the usual places. It is comprised of 583 non-merge commits since v2.4.0, contributed by 70 people, 21 of which are new faces," says Junio C Hamano.

There are numerous new features in Git 2.5.0 and it would be impossible for us to list them all here, so we're going to talk a little about some of the most interesting ones. For example, some new options have been added to the bash completion script.

Furthermore, there's better support for handling branches in Perforce when using the "git p4" command, and the "git help" command learned new tricks and it will now help newcomers better understand how to use the software.

Additionally, Git 2.5 contains many other improvements to the "git p4" command, as well as to things like Perforce, the "git merge FETCH_HEAD" command, the "git subtree" script, the "git mergetool" command, and the "git upload-pack" command.

Over 60 bugs were squashed in this Git 2.5

As expected, Git 2.5 also fixes numerous bugs that were reported by users since the previous stable release of the software. Looking at the changelog, which we have attached at the end of the article, we could count a little over 60 bugfixes.
