It looks like the awesome development team behind the powerful, free, open-source and cross-platform GIMP image editor software has been working hard to prepare new features and improve existing ones in the widely used GNU application.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is currently used in dozens of Linux kernel-based operating systems by default, and it has proved over the years to be the perfect tool for all sorts of photo retouching and manipulation operations.

While the next major version, GIMP 2.10, is currently in the works, with the GIMP 2.9.4 development snapshot out the door a couple of days ago, the development team is pleased to release today an update to the current stable series, GIMP 2.8.

GIMP 2.8.18 is now available, coming approximately 8 months since the 20-year anniversary GIMP 2.8.16 release, bringing various improvements to the graphical user interface, as well as many fixes to the installer and plugins.

Here's what's new in GIMP 2.8.18

According to the internal changelog attached below for your reading pleasure, GMIP 2.8.18 improves Script-Fu modulo support for large numbers, repairs the export of the KISS CEL raster image file format, and adds proper Unicode support to Script-Fu regex.

GIMP will no longer crash when dragging and dropping sRGB JPEG images, and the file-compressor component now provides users with progress bars so that they can see what's going on all the time.

Another interesting change implemented in today's GIMP 2.8.18 release is that the installer now uses a different compression method, which automatically translates to the fact that its size is much smaller, by at least 20%, according to the devs.

Furthermore, GIMP now features translations for the French, Dutch, Catalan, and Danish languages in the installer, existing documentation and translations have been updated, and numerous other annoyances reported by users since GIMP 2.8.16 fixed.

Last but not least, there are a couple of enhancements to the GUI (Graphical User Interface) for Mac OS X operating systems, and the gamut warning color now works correctly for the LCMS (Liquid Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry) display filter.

To see what exactly has been changed in GIMP 2.8.18, which you can download for GNU/Linux operating systems as a source archive right now via our website, feel free to check out the full changelog below. In the coming days, GIMP 2.8.18 should make its way into the main software repositories of popular GNU/Linux distributions.
