While not a Linux kernel-based operating system, GhostBSD is an important and acclaimed player in the open-source ecosystem, and it has recently published details about the second Beta build of its next major version, GhostBSD 10.1 (codename Eve).

According to the release notes, which have also been attached at the end of the article for references, GhostBSD 10.1 Beta 2 is distributed in two different editions, with the MATE and Xfce desktop environments, supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit computers, and introduces numerous improvements and bugfixes.

One of the most important changes brought by GhostBSD 10.1 Beta 2 is the re-addition of support for the Xfce desktop environment. Moreover, the Keyboard Layout and PCDM (PC-BSD Display Manager) Locales components are now fully functional, various issues with Intel and AMD Radeon/ATI graphics cards have been resolved, and the SpiderOak utility has been removed from the Live DVDs.

"We are pleased to announce the availability GhostBSD 10.1 Beta 2 MATE & XFCE  which is available on SourceForge for the amd64 and i386 architectures," says Eric Turgeon. "Before going further I will like to say a special thanks Ovidiu who recently join back the project and Andrea who join the project, they have help to make GhostBSD better, add up new feature and fixed issue."

Users can now install software from ports and pkg sources in the live session

In addition, GhostBSD 10.1 Beta 2 now lets users install software packages from ports or pkg sources directly from the live session, no matter if they are booting from a Live USB or Live DVD medium. The installation process has been greatly improved, and the "failed to copy" issues have been addressed.

Last but not least, the Qt development utilities have been removed from the Live ISO images of GhostBSD 10.1, the partition editor tool implemented in the installer has received various improvements, both under-the-hood and user-visible ones. It is now possible to choose between installing a GRUB and BSD boot managers during installation.

Download GhostBSD 10.1 Beta 2 right now from Softpedia, where you can find both MATE and Xfce editions. All ISO images are now hybrid, which means that you can install them on either DVD discs or USB sticks of 2GB or higher capacity.
