Users no longer see the app after reserving the upgrade

Back on June 1, Microsoft rolled out the “Get Windows 10” app, a small utility that sits in the system tray and allows users running Windows 7 or 8.1 on their PCs to reserve their free upgrade to Windows 10 (these two versions of Windows are eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10 if it’s performed in the first 12 months after launch).

It’s no secret that this little tool was annoying and some proceeded to remove it, but it turns out that, in some cases, the app itself disappeared completely for an unknown reason.

Posts on Microsoft’s forums indicate that the “Get Windows 10” app is nowhere to be seen on some PCs running either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, and since it was supposed to download the necessary install files for the new operating system in the background, some users are afraid that they won’t get the upgrade to Windows 10 when it launches.

If you reserve the upgrade, the “Get Windows 10” app silently downloads all necessary files in the background, so on July 29 when the new operating system goes live, you should be able to launch the installer on your computer too.

GWX.exe no longer working

Since the “Get Windows 10” app is no longer available in the system tray, some people tried to launch it manually, but it turns out that the GWX.exe process is not working either.

The process simply fails to launch, and some users claim that it could be caused by a recent update that Microsoft made to the app to display pricing information for some specific markets.

Microsoft hasn’t yet announced any changes that might impact users’ PCs, but expect the app to re-appear in the system tray before July 29 when the new Windows 10 is projected to launch, so your computer should be ready to fire up the installer.
