The Gentoo Linux operating system has received an updated Live DVD ISO image today, dubbed "Choice Edition," which brings the latest GNU/Linux technologies.

According to the announcement, the Gentoo Linux "Choice Edition" Live DVD has been released in celebration of the continued collaboration between Gentoo developers and the community. And it looks like it brings some of the latest software releases, such as the KDE Plasma 5.6 desktop environment.

Powered by Linux kernel 4.5, the new Gentoo Linux "Choice Edition" Live DVD sports the X.Org Server 1.18.3 display server, LibreOffice 5.1.2 office suite, Mozilla Firefox 45.0.1 and Chromium 50.0.2661.75 web browsers. Then, there are Mozilla Thunderbird 38.7.1 email and news suite, Blender 2.72b-r3 3D modeller, GIMP 2.9.2 image editor, and Gparted 0.25.0 partition editor.

UEFI support and ZFS on Linux

However, it appears that the Gentoo Linux "Choice Edition" Live DVD contains some special features that have not yet been available in previous releases of the ISO image of the operating system, such as support for modern UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) machines, as well as ZFS on Linux.

Lately, many GNU/Linux operating system have adopted ZFS on Linux, including Ubuntu, Debian GNU/Linux, and Manjaro Linux, and now Gentoo Linux jumps on the ZFS bandwagon. Another interesting feature implemented in the new Live DVD edition is AUFS-based writable filesystems for those who want to emerge new packages.

Gentoo Linux "Choice Edition" Live DVD 20160514 is available for download right now via our website, where it is distributed for free as 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (x86) ISO images. There's also a 64-bit multilib version available. If you want to study the package list of the Gentoo Linux 20160514 ISOs, please read the official announcement.
