Today, March 13, 2017, Tomasz Jokiel from Porteus Solutions was proud to announce the release and immediate availability for download of the Gentoo-based Porteus Kiosk 4.3 operating system.

It's been more than three months since the release of Porteus Kiosk 4.2, and today's maintenance update adds some of the recently released GNU/Linux technologies and open source applications, including the long-term supported Linux 4.9.14 kernel, X.Org Server 1.19.2 display server, and Mozilla Firefox 45.8.0 ESR web browser.

Additionally, Porteus Kiosk 4.3 ships with Google Chrome 55.0.2883.87 and Adobe Flash 24.0.0.221 pre-installed. It also looks like most of the userland packages have been updated to their latest versions based on the Gentoo portage snapshot tagged as build 20170311 (released on March 11, 2017).

Here's what's new in Porteus Kiosk 4.3.0

Besides the updated packages, the Porteus Kiosk 4.3 release adds various changes, such as the ability for the 'client_id=automatic' configuration parameter to automatically assign client IDs to a kiosk, support for creating and restoring system snapshots via new backup and restore utilities, and support for using OpenDNS as a secondary DNS server.

The Administration Panel was updated as well to allow hiding of offline clients, as well as to filter them by kernel version, hostname, or browser. Debug information will now be displayed when the system installation fails to help you identify problems more easily, and it looks like the client logs are now shown on the top of the monitoring window.

Other than that, Porteus Kiosk 4.3 enables CUPS' serial backend by default, which is required by various USB printers for direct USB connection, as well as the ability to view archived (rotated) client logs directly in the Administration Panel.
