Porteus Solutions, through Tomasz Jokiel, announced today the release and immediate availability of Porteus Kiosk 4.2.0, the latest stable version of the free and open source Gentoo-based kiosk operating system for web terminals.

Powered by the latest long-term supported Linux 4.4.36 kernel, Porteus Kiosk 4.2.0 ships with some of the latest and greatest GNU/Linux technologies and Open Source software projects, including the recently released X.Org Server 1.18.4 display server, as well as the Mozilla Firefox 45.5.1 ESR and Google Chrome 54.0.2840.100 web browsers.

Among other noteworthy improvements implemented in Porteus Kiosk 4.2.0, we can mention that it's now possible to host all the files utilized by the clients, including but not limited to proxy pac config, browser preferences, screensaver slideshow images, and wallpaper, directly on Porteus Kiosk Server without the need to use a third-party hosting service.

There's also the ability to toggle between multiple browser tabs at a specific time interval, which might just come in handy when using Porteus Kiosk for digital signage purposes, support for rotating sever logs multiple times a day, and the ability to edit remote configuration files directly on the server by using the Administration Panel. Various other small bugfixes and under-the-hood improvements have been added.

New Conky app lets users monitor the resources of Porteus Kiosk Server

It looks like the 'C++' and 'C--' keyboard shortcuts are now disabled when the 'disable_zoom_controls=yes' parameter is being used. Additionally, the screensaver slideshow is now capable of displaying images in random order instead of by name, and a brand-new Conky application that can be used to monitor the resources of your Porteus Kiosk Server installation, including CPU, RAM, network and storage usage, has been introduced.

Last but not least, Porteus Kiosk 4.2.0 includes a re-compiled xf86-video-intel driver for Intel graphics cards, which no longer features DRI3 support because it caused issues on older, 3rd generation Intel Alviso GPUs. Porteus Kiosk and Porteus Kiosk Server 4.2.0 installation images are now available for download from our website for 64-bit platforms.
