Tomasz Jokiel from the Porteus Linux project announced earlier the release and immediate availability for download of the Porteus Kiosk 3.5.0 operating system based on Gentoo Linux, after being in development for approximately three months.

Powered by Linux kernel 4.1.6 LTS, Porteus Kiosk 3.5.0 introduces great new features, such as support for nested configurations in remote management, support for managed bookmarks that allow users to access a predefined set of web pages, and the ability to disable video outputs completely or set them in specific positions.

There's also the ability to import SSL certificates during the boot of the Kiosk operating system from provided URLs, support for proxy exceptions, support for appending hostnames and Mac addresses to the homepage URL in order to track kiosks, as well as support for restarting the web browser at specific periods of time when there's no user activity.

Furthermore, Porteus Kiosk 3.5.0 comes with the Mozilla Firefox 38.2.1 ESR and Google Chrome 44.0.2403.157 web browsers, it allows users to set a slideshow of images as screensaver, prevents users from changing any printing settings by implementing a new silent printing system, and adds the ability to automatically hide the mouse cursor after a specific period that can be set by the user.

"I'm pleased to announce that Porteus Kiosk 3.5.0 is now available for download," says Tomasz Jokiel. "New version sums all the development which happened in the last 3 months and which can be tracked with details in the changelog to the Porteus Kiosk 'automatic updates' service."

Touchscreen calibrations are now supported

The new Porteus Kiosk 3.5.0 also introduces support for "static IP to address mappings," which promises to address the issues with domain names that are not fully qualified, it is capable of performing touchscreen calibrations directly from the Kiosk wizard, and implements a homepage check function that makes sure it is accessible before the launch of the default web browser.

Of course, there are numerous other small under-the-hood improvements, numerous bugfixes, as well as cosmetic changes that make the Porteus Kiosk operating system more reliable and stable than ever, and you can read all about them in the detailed changelog attached at the end of the article.
