GNU/Linux developer Arne Exton announced today, March 9, 2017, the immediate availability of a new build of his Gentoo-based exGENT Linux distribution, which the developer dubbed as the best version ever.

exGENT Build 170309 is now available for those who want to install a Gentoo-based distro in less than 10 minutes. It uses the lightweight Xfce 4.12.1 desktop environment by default and the Linux 4.9.12 kernel. The OS is distributed as a Live DVD designed to run only on 64-bit architectures.

"I call it exGENT 2017 Xfce4 Live DVD. It replaces version 20170309," said Arne Exton in today's announcement. "The ISO file is of 2670 MB due to the fact that this version has a lot of packages pre-installed. Despite this exGENT version 170309 runs surprisingly fast from DVD or USB. Even in VirtualBox and VMWare."

All installed packages have been updated to their latest versions

Being based on Gentoo, the new exGENT build includes all the latest package versions as of March 9, 2017. You can study the full list of installed packages if you're curious to know what exactly was included in build 170309. However, the biggest new feature is that the file system is now writable when running exGENT in live mode.

What this means exactly is that users will now be able to install new packages when running the operating system directly from the bootable medium. Best of all, if you set up your system in live mode and then you decide to install it on your computer, all packages and settings will also be installed.

You can download exGENT Build 170309 right now from our website, where you'll get an ISO image that you can write on a USB flash drive using the dd command in Linux or a Live USB creator like Rufus or Etcher in Windows. The developer says that this exGENT build is faster than any other Live distro he has tried.
