The developers of the openSUSE-based GeckoLinux computer operating system have announced the release of a new set of respinned live ISO images of their GNU/Linux distribution, which is now rebased on openSUSE Leap 42.2.

As you might be aware, OpenSuSE Leap is a rock-solid and well-tested Linux OS targeted at small and medium-sized businesses that want to use an open-source operating system that offers the reliability and stability they need to become successful. On the other hand, bleeding-edge users have openSUSE Tumbleweed.

openSUSE Tumbleweed follows a rolling release model, which means that it doesn't get regular ISO releases, but instead keeps users' computers up to date at all times through snapshots that contain the latest software releases. The GeckoLinux project produces two different sets of ISOs, rolling and static.

GeckoLinux Static 422.161213 spins are out now

The latest GeckoLinux Static editions were updated this week to version 422.161213, based on the recently released openSUSE Leap 42.2 operating system, and they ship with the long-term supported Linux 4.4.36 kernel, GNU C Library 2.22, systemd 228 init system, as well as Qt 5.6.1 for KDE Plasma 5 and LXQt desktops.

Furthermore, GeckoLinux Static 422.161213 includes the GTK+ 3.20 GUI toolkit for the rest of the flavors, such as the GNOME, Xfce, Cinnamon, MATE, and Budgie desktop environments. Talking about the included desktops, this release comes with KDE Plasma 5.8.2 LTS, Cinnamon 3.0.7, Xfce 4.12, GNOME 3.20, Budgie 10.2.9, MATE 1.16, and LXQt 0.11.0.

There's also the GeckoLinux Static BareBones edition, perfect for high customizations of the OS, which comes with very lightweight Openbox window manager and a handful of packages, including the LightDM display manager, Mozilla Firefox web browser, YaST installation and configuration tool, and a terminal emulator.

"Perhaps the most important change is that the old yast2-live-installer that served us well for past releases is no longer supported by openSUSE and no longer works. Therefore, it has been replaced by the Calamares universal installer framework," reads the announcement.

Other than that, the in-house built language-installer.sh script was updated for non-English languages, there's now built-in support for SiS graphics and the Calamares universal installer framework, as you can read in the developer's commentary above.
