After announcing last week the release of the GeckoLinux Static 422.161213 Editions based on openSUSE Leap 42.2, the developers of the openSUSE-based distribution launched today new respins of the GeckoLinux Rolling Editions.

The GeckoLinux Rolling editions are currently based on the OpenSuSE Tumbleweed operating system, which follows a rolling release model. Same goes for the GeckoLinux Rolling spins, and the latest version, build 999.161218, was rebased on the newest Tumbleweed snapshot, 20161216 at the moment of writing this article.

"The base system has been updated to the 20161216 release of openSUSE Tumbleweed, with an updated Linux kernel at version 4.8.13. Also the script created by Mindaugas Baranauskas to ensure that Xorg correctly starts has been significantly improved, and SiS graphics support has been included too," reads the release announcement.

Now shipping with the Calamares universal installer framework

It looks to us like the GeckoLinux Rolling 999.161218 Editions ship with pretty much the same features as the GeckoLinux Static 422.161213 Editions, such as the replacement of the unsupported yast2-live-installer component with the Calamares universal installer framework, which offers a modern and powerful installer for all users.

As expected, GeckoLinux Rolling 999.161218 Editions consist of the KDE Plasma, Cinnamon, GNOME, MATE, Xfce, Budgie, LXQt, and BareBones variants, which are updated to KDE Plasma 5.8.4 LTS, Cinnamon 3.2, GNOME 3.22.2, MATE 1.16, Budgie 10.2.9, and LXQt 0.11.0. GeckoLinux Rolling BareBones edition comes with Openbox.

The GeckoLinux Rolling 999.161218 Editions Live ISO images are available for download right now from the distribution's website or via ours. They are supported only on 64-bit computers and let you deploy the OS on new PCs. Existing users are not required to download anything to keep their installation up to date.
