After a long break, the developer of the GeckoLinux operating system proudly announced today, November 4, 2016, the general availability of a new set of updated editions of his GeckoLinux Rolling distribution.

GeckoLinux Rolling 999.161031 is now the latest version of the GNU/Linux distribution, and it appears to be a total rebase with a brand new kernel from the Linux 4.8 series (version 4.8.4), as well as recent components like the GNU C Library 2.24, FreeType2 2.7, Qt 5.7.0, and systemd 228. For connoisseurs, the new version is based on snapshot 20161031 of OpenSuSE Tumbleweed, which also follows a rolling release model.

Additionally, GeckoLinux Rolling 999.161031 introduces unified theming of GTK+ and Qt applications, thanks to the implementation of the libqt5-qtstyleplugins-platformtheme-gtk2 package, and updates the GeckoLinux language-installer.sh script to better support non-English languages, making installing alternative language packs a lot easier than before.

"I'm pleased to announce updated releases of all eight spins of the GeckoLinux Rolling editions," said the GeckoLinux developer in the Google Groups announcement. "The GeckoLinux Rolling editions are live installable images based on openSUSE Tumbleweed with its frequent and extremely well tested stable rolling releases, combined with Packman driver and multimedia support."

GeckoLinux Rolling is always in sync with the openSUSE Tumbleweed repos

The best part of using GeckoLinux Rolling 999.161031 is that after installation, users will be able to update the distribution and keep it in sync with the upstream openSUSE Tumbleweed software repositories using the built-in package management system. Apart from the Tumbleweed technologies, GeckoLinux also features its own tweaks to make the system more reliable and user-friendly.

As usual, GeckoLinux Rolling ships with the Cinnamon, GNOME, Xfce, KDE Plasma, MATE, Budgie, LXQt, and BareBone (uses the Openbox window manager) editions, all of which are fully compatible with 64-bit computers.
