14 DAY TRIAL // Users of the GeckoLinux distribution are in for yet another treat after the announcement of updated GeckoLinux 421.160623.0 "Rolling" Editions based on the latest openSUSE Tumbleweed snapshots.
And this time, the GeckoLinux developer has managed to update all the "Static" Editions based on the latest package versions available in the OpenSuSE Leap 42.1 software repositories as of June 27, 2016.
We told you yesterday, when we wrote our first story about GeckoLinux, that the entire project aims to boost the adoption of the openSUSE Linux operating system, no matter if we're talking about Tumbleweed or Leap series, on personal computers.
As explained there, GeckoLinux "Rolling" Editions are based on openSUSE Tumbleweed, and the "Static" Editions on openSUSE Leap, each one shipping with up to eight different flavors using various desktop environments.
Besides including the latest package versions in the Packman repo for openSUSE Leap 42.1, GeckoLinux 421.160627.0 "Static" Editions updates the flavors that use LightDM as default login manager.
"The non-official X11:Utilities repository has been removed, and the older but better-tested LightDM version from the standard openSUSE Leap repository is now used," explains the GeckoLinux developer in his latest report.
Because of this important change, users are urged to update their GeckoLinux installations as soon as possible to avoid issues when you need to install additional languages by using the "language-installer.sh" script.
GeckoLinux "Static" Editions now available for download
The good news for newcomers to this openSUSE-based operating system is that all the GeckoLinux "Static" Editions are now available for download with the GNOME, KDE Plasma 5, Xfce, Cinnamon, Mate, LXQt, Budgie, and Openbox desktop environments.
The main difference between GeckoLinux "Static" Editions and openSUSE Leap is that the former can be used as Live USB/DVD images, and if you decide to install the respective OS on your computer, you can do that too. Also, you can test-drive all of them right now at http://geckolinux.github.io.
