14 DAY TRIAL // A report from last month revealed that Samsung already started work on the Galaxy Note 8 and that the smartphone would be codenamed Baikal. But SamMobile has just found out that the actual codename is in fact “Great.”
The Galaxy Note 8 would carry the codename “Great” and the code number SM-N950F. Samsung skips the number 4 in codes for upcoming phones, since Koreans consider it to be unlucky. The letter at the end suggests that this particular code name is for the international unlocked variant, while other models will have different letters at the end, depending on the market or carrier.
The code name “Great” would suggest that Samsung intends to bring major changes to the Galaxy Note 8, in order to regain consumer trust lost during the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Samsung did say that it intends to develop a “better, safer and very innovative Note 8,” and we expect the company to stick to this plan.
A refurnished Galaxy Note 7 is still in the works
The report also mentions that Samsung hasn’t given up on plans to refurbish the Galaxy Note 7 and sell it in certain markets. There were rumors that Samsung could sell such a device in India and Vietnam, but its division in the former market quickly refuted them.
However, the latest report says that a refurbished Galaxy Note 7 might arrive in South Korea, with model number SM-N935, while the original device carried the code number SM-N930. There’s not much information on the matter, but a refurbished Galaxy Note 7 would be quite plausible, considering that Samsung could simply swap the batteries inside the phones, in order to make them safe to use.
Several investigations into Note 7 incidents concluded that the batteries were at fault, while other components didn’t cause the phones to overheat. If this is indeed Samsung’s plan, then more information is bound to surface soon.
