Frugalware is now only a rolling operating system

Believe it or not, the Frugalware Linux distribution is still around, and while it was never all that popular among newcomers, some of us, hardcore geeks, still want to enjoy a well-done operating system on our personal computers.

And today, September 5, 2016, we're happy to inform our readers about the immediate availability of Frugalware 2.1 "Derowd," the latest and most advanced version of the independent GNU/Linux distro that has always promoted the newest release of the GNOME desktop environment.

Those who used Frugalware Linux in the past might remember that the distro had rolling and stable variants, just like OpenSuSE Linux is doing with Tumbleweed and Leap. Still, due to the fact that Frugalware is not so popular, and because there aren't so many developers behind it, it's now only a rolling operating system.

"Frugalware provided a -stable and -current tree in the past. As our team shrunk quite a bit lately, we lack the manpower to continue providing a, secure and stable tree while providing bleeding edge and latest package in another. Therefore we decided to move all users to the -current tree," reads today's announcement.

Here's what's new in Frugalware 2.1

Release highlights of Frugalware 2.1 "Derowd" include the latest Linux 4.7.2 kernel, X.Org Server 1.18.4 display server, Mesa 12.0.1 3D Graphics Library, LibreOffice 5.2.1.2 office suite, Mozilla Firefox 48.0.2 and Chromium 52.0.2743.116 web browsers, as well as KDE Plasma 5.7.3 and GNOME 3.20.2 desktop environments.

Another important change in Frugalware 2.1 is the fact that the development team also decided to no longer maintain and produce a 32-bit ISO image of the distribution, though they will still provide users with i686 packages as they are needed on the x86_64 (64-bit) platform as well.

Without further ado, we invite you to download the 64-bit Frugalware 2.1 "Derowd" ISO image right now via our website if you want to try a different, well-designed Linux OS, and if you're using the stable or current branch of Frugalware, you can now update to the Derowd release. Have fun!
