Your feedback is needed before it lands in the stable repos

In October last year, Fedora contributor Charles Profitt wrote a tutorial on how to compile and install the FreeOrion open-source turn-based 4X space empire and galactic conquest video game on the latest release of Fedora Linux.

Since then, a lot of Linux gamers using the Fedora operating system showed interest in having an easy-to-install package that would allow them to enjoy the game instead of spending a lot of time compiling it.

Seeing all that interest, Link Dupont announced today, January 11, 2017, that FreeOrion would soon make its way into the Fedora repositories, but they kinda need your help to achieve this task.

Here's how you can help

First, you need to install it. At the moment of writing this article, FreeOrion lies in the fedora-updates-testing repository of Fedora 24 and Fedora 25 releases, and you can install it with a single command if you temporarily enable the "testing" repo.

dnf --enablerepo=updates-testing install freeorion Once installed, the game can be fired up either from the command-line by running "freeorion" (without quotes, of course) or directly from the Application menu of the desktop environment you use (GNOME, Cinnamon, Xfce, LXDE, KDE, etc.).

If the game works fine for you and you did or did not encounter any issues with the installation or when playing it, all you need to do is to provide feedback to Fedora QA team by filling out this form.

"Feedback consists of comments, and either a positive or negative 'karma' vote. Once a package has received enough positive karma, the submitter can push the package to the stable repositories, making it available to all Fedora users," said Link Dupont.

That's all. You can enjoy FreeOrion on your Fedora Linux distribution, and if you feel a little bit more adventurous, you can install and send feedback for other packages that lie in Bodhi, Fedora’s package update system.
