14 DAY TRIAL // FreeNAS' Jordan Hubbard was proud to announce the other day, October 8, the release and immediate availability for download of the first Alpha build of the upcoming FreeNAS open source Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution.
According to the release notes, FreeNAS 10 Alpha is based on the latest FreeBSD 10.2 operating system and introduces a great number of new technologies, which makes it one of the biggest releases ever published in the history of the FreeNAS project.
Among the most interesting features that landed in FreeNAS 10 Alpha, we can mention a totally new extensible and pluggable "middleware" server that was engineered from the ground up to be used for mediating all access to the operating system and allowing access to the OS to concurrent multi-users.
A structured CLI interpreter was added as well, which includes features like tab-completion, high-level access to all of the operating system's event information and functions, and inline help.
"Welcome to the first ALPHA Release of FreeNAS 10, a major upgrade from FreeNAS 9.3 and a new chapter in the project’s history which offers a significant number of new technologies," says Jordan Hubbard.
Upcoming features of FreeNAS 10
It appears that the new "middleware" server is the start of this first Alpha build of FreeNAS 10, as it received two graphical user interfaces. Moreover, the developers managed to add new file sharing methods, IPFS (The Inter-Planetary Filesystem) and Riak CS.
Among some upcoming features of FreeNAS 10, we can mention support for the Gluster and Swift file sharing methods, as well as improved versions of the Jail/Plugin interfaces.
