Ken Moore, the creator of the FreeBSD-based TrueOS computer operating system and Lumina desktop environment, released the TrueOS 17.12 update, which introduces multiple enhancements.

Synced with the FreeBSD 12.0-CURRENT and FreeBSD ports tree software repositories as of December 4 and November 30, 2017, respectively, TrueOS 17.12 is an incremental update to the operating system adding improvements to the OpenRC-based boot process, removable-device management, LibreSSL and SysAdm API integrations, as well as Bhyve support for TrueOS Server Install.

"We have also been working quite a bit on the server offering of TrueOS, and are pleased to provide new text-based server images with support for Virtualization systems such as bhyve," said Ken Moore in the release announcement. "This allows for simple server deployments which also take advantage of the TrueOS improvements to FreeBSD."

Ships with Lumina Desktop 1.4.1

As expected, TrueOS 17.12 ships with Lumina Desktop 1.4.1 as default desktop environment, which brings a new theme engine and ZFS integrations. Support for multiple simultaneous graphical sessions has been added to the PCDM login manager as well, and TrueOS's integrated update system now features an "active" update backend where you need to click the "Update Now" button in PCDM, Lumina or SysAdm to start the update process.

Numerous apps have been updated to their latest versions in TrueOS 17.12, which ships with Firefox 57.0.1 Quantum, Firefox 52.5.0 ESR, Palemoon 27.6.2, QupZilla 2.1.2 (Qt5) and 1.8.9 (Qt4), Iridium 58.0, SeaMonkey 2.49.1, and Chromium 61.0.3163.11 web browsers, LibreOffice 5.3.7 and Apache OpenOffice 4.1.4 office suites, as well as LLVM 5.0.0, Python 3.6, GCC 7.2, Apache 2.4, Git 2.15.1, and GitLab 10.1.4.

Alternative desktop environments like Xfce 4.12, LXDE 1.0, MATE 1.18.0, KDE 4.14.3, GNOME 3.18.0, and Cinnamon 2.4.6 are provided as well for those who don't want to use Lumina Desktop. While existing users will be able to upgrade their systems using the built-in update system, newcomers can download TrueOS 17.12 from our website for new deployments.
