While not a GNU/Linux operating system, FreeBSD is an imperative open-source project, the most acclaimed BSD distribution on the market. Today, we announce the availability for download and testing of the second RC (Release Candidate) version of FreeBSD 10.2.

According to the release announcement, FreeBSD 10.2 Release Candidate 2 brings with it numerous improvements, such as corrections to the pkg repository configuration file, support for using static build date for reproducibility to ntpd, fixes to the nvme driver related to ZFS TRIM, as well as fixes for issues with the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) loader.

Additionally, FreeBSD 10.2 RC2 fixes bugs in the pre-8.x F_GETLK command, patches a shell injection vulnerability in patch, addresses an issue with TCP reassembly, updates the OpenSSH package to the latest version available, repairs a regression with the resume and suspend functions for many laptops, and fixes multiple issues in pf.

Fixed-size format is now used for VHD-formatted virtual machine disk images, a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) checksum offloading issue was fixed for Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, a locking issue was resolved, the uart driver and tar archiver were updated, and the pms driver was removed.

FreeBSD 10.2 arrives on August 31, 2015

As usual, those of you who wish to take the Release Candidate version of the forthcoming FreeBSD 10.2 distribution for a test drive can download the FreeBSD 10.2 RC2 ISO images for 64-bit and 32-bit architectures right now from Softpedia. More ISO images for numerous other architectures can be found on the project's website.

We remind everyone attempting to install this release of FreeBSD 10.2 that the distribution is still in development, and it has some rough edges, which means that bugs are present. Do not install it on production environments where stability is of the essence. The final release of FreeBSD 10.2 will be unveiled on August 31, 2015. Happy testing!
