Microsoft extends Windows 10 S to Pro upgrade offer

Microsoft rolled out the Surface Laptop with Windows 10 S earlier this year, and since the company knew that many buyers might not be pleased with an operating system limited to Windows Store apps, it rolled out an offer allowing them to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro completely free by the end of the year.

Today, the company is announcing that the Windows 10 S to Pro upgrade offer is getting an update as well, with users now allowed to perform the switch until March 31, 2018.

This means the company provides customers with an extra 3 months to decide on whether they should replace Windows 10 S with Windows 10 Pro, and this is particularly helpful given that the S SKU is still a new product and many enterprises and organizations might need to run a pilot program to determine whether it meets their needs or not.

Surface Laptop available in more markets

Microsoft hasn’t released a separate press release for this upgrade offer extension, and the company only revealed the news as part of an announcement for the Surface Laptop becoming available in more markets across the world.

“Don’t forget that Surface Laptop comes with the streamlined security and performance of Windows 10 S, and verified apps in the Windows Store,” the software giant explained.

“For those that find they need an application that isn’t yet available in the Store and must be installed from another source, we’re extending the ability to switch from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro for free until March 31, 2018. We hope this provides increased flexibility for those people searching for the perfect back-to-school or holiday gift.”

Windows 10 S is a rather controversial operating system because it adopts an approach similar to the one of Windows RT, blocking the install of Win32 software and limiting users to the Windows Store. Microsoft says this way it can guarantee malware-proof security because all apps published in the Windows Store are completely secure, and recommends the operating system to the education sector in the first place.
