14 DAY TRIAL // While both Apple and Samsung are struggling to find a way to integrate the fingerprint sensor in the display, a Chinese company is very close to launching a model featuring this technology.
Chinese firm Vivo is currently giving the finishing touches to a model called X9 Plus and expected to come with a fingerprint reader integrated right into the display, thus eliminating the need for a physical home button or for a dedicated sensor on the back of the phone.
While at this point little is known about this new Vivo model, it’s believed it’ll launch on June 28 at the Shanghai MWC conference, with sales to begin next month.
Apple to offer it on the iPhone 8, Samsung late to the party
As far as fingerprint sensors integrated into the display go, Apple is likely to be the first major company offering such a technology, with the upcoming iPhone 8 very likely to integrate it.
Apple will launch three different iPhone models, namely iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone 8, and the last one is expected to boast several exclusive features, like an OLED screen, fingerprint in the display, and wireless charging.
At the same time, Samsung is also said to be working on similar features for its flagship phones, though in this case the project doesn’t seem to be advancing at the desired pace.
Originally, it was believed that the Samsung Galaxy S8 would be the first one to feature a fingerprint sensor in the display, but people close to the matter said the tech wasn’t ready. Samsung was thus believed to be holding it back for the Galaxy Note 8 coming in August, but now it turns out another delay is needed because the feature isn’t yet finalized.
Apple could thus be the company making this new security feature mainstream, with the majority of other phone manufacturers also expected to embrace it in the next 12 months.
