Soon, mobile phone users out there might get the chance to enjoy the capabilities of yet another popular player while on the go, as the team behind foobar2000 has decided to bring its software to them as well.

At the moment, the player is available only on desktops, where it has seen great popularity, and it might prove as successful on mobiles as well, the team believes.

As such, they have just announced a Kickstarter project aimed at funding the building of Foobar2000 for smartphones and tablets alike.

According to the project’s page, the team is considering the launch of this application on all top three mobile operating systems, namely Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.

However, the first to receive it will actually be iOS, with planned development expansion to Android and Windows Phone devices shortly after, the team explains.

“foobar2000 mobile will be built from the ground up specifically for mobile devices, giving the opportunity to adapt specifically to the mobile platform,” the developers announced.

“Our first funding goal is the development of iOS foobar2000, also are stretch goals to add Android, Windows Phone & Tablets.”

According to the team, development of the mobile client has already kicked off and is set to continue throughout the kickstarter.

At the same time, they note that foobar2000 mobile will be built by a team of proven developers and that other “star” app builders will be added to it using the proceeds of the kickstarter.

They set a goal of $100,000 (€72,000) in funding for the iOS application, $200,000 (€145,000) for the Android version, and $300,000 (€218,000) for the Windows Phone client (which will also work on Windows tablets).

However, the team does not plan on stopping here, as they are also looking into means of adding cloud management capabilities to the service, as well as into going social with it soon after.

Those of you interested in backing the project should head over to its official page to learn more on the matter and how you can help out.

Depending on the contribution, users will receive access to the forums, to the developer’s blog, to alpha and beta versions of the app, as well as to the final release, and more.

“All backers receive access to the private mobile foobar2000 forum, engage in a hot bed of discussion, perhaps your great ideas can be incorporated into the final design,” the team notes.

Various prizes are also available for those interested in offering support for this project, such as a foobar2000 T-Shirt for Kool Cats, Prime Movers, Founders, or Skin Designers.
