Cloud Clipboard enabled in an early RS4 preview build

Cloud Clipboard and Windows Timeline are two features that were announced by Microsoft at the Build developer conference earlier this year but which didn’t make it to the Fall Creators Update because they require additional work before being released to users.

Expected to arrive in the Windows 10 Redstone 4 update in the spring of 2018, Cloud Clipboard is already in its early days in the first preview builds shipped as part of the Skip Ahead channel, letting us get a glimpse into how this feature could work.

Cloud Clipboard is a feature that makes it possible to copy and paste content between multiple devices configured with the same Microsoft account, including phones and PCs.

Screenshots posted by Thurrott and reportedly coming from build 17004 reveal that the Cloud Clipboard will be easy to trigger by simply pressing the Windows key + V on the keyboard or using a dedicated cloud icon on the touch keyboard on tablets.

Once this feature is invoked, users are provided with a popup that includes the list of items available in the clipboard, with those stored in the cloud marked with a small cloud icon. Pasting the content only requires a click or tap on the specific item, though at this point there are no other options available, such as deleting items or clearing clipboard content.

Redstone 4 coming in spring 2018

At this point, the existing implementation of the Cloud Clipboard does not work, so Microsoft is most likely only experimenting with this feature before introducing it as part of insider previews released to users.

Microsoft is currently finalizing work on the Fall Creators Update due on October 17, and shortly after that, the firm should start shipping preview builds of the Redstone 4 to all users in the Insider program.

Not a long time ago Microsoft pledged to a Windows 10 update cycle with two different releases every year, in March and September, so the Redstone 4 update should be finalized in the spring of 2018. Obviously, insiders will get access to new features substantially sooner, though the first early builds won’t include any big changes.
