Today, October 6, 2016, Jim Thompson from the pfSense project has had the great pleasure of announcing the release and immediate availability of the pfSense 2.3.2-p1 maintenance update to the open source BSD-based firewall distro.

pfSense 2.3.2 Update 1 (2.3.2-p1) is here approximately two and a half months after the release of the initial build, namely pfSense 2.3.2, which brought over 70 improvements in various areas of the FreeBSD-based firewall distribution. It's mostly a bug fix release, but some new features have been implemented as well.

"This is a maintenance release in the 2.3.x series, bringing a number of bug fixes," says Jim Thompson in the today's release announcement. "This release includes fixes for 34 bugs and 2 feature items completed. [...] As always, you can upgrade from any prior version directly to 2.3.2_1. The Upgrade Guide covers everything you’ll need to know for upgrading in general."

Multiple vulnerabilities in OpenSSL patched

As you might imagine, the recent OpenSSL vulnerabilities, which were patched upstream in the OpenSSL 1.0.2j release, have also been affecting the pfSense firewall OS, which is based on FreeBSD. Therefore, pfSense 2.3.2-p1 patches them, along with several HyperV-related issues and numerous reported bugs that you can view in the changelog attached below.

As for the new features, pfSense 2.3.2-p1 adds an encoding to the "zone" parameter on Captive Portal pages, as well as output encoding support to the diag_dns.php file, which might be useful for results returned from DNS, various checks for preventing access to undefined offsets in IPv6.inc, the "-C /dev/null" option to the dnsmasq command, and the "-l" option to traceroute6.
