GNOME 3.23.1 is out but only includes a few updated apps

Just a few minutes ago, GNOME developer Javier Jardón informed us about the availability of the GNOME 3.23.1 desktop environment, which is the first development snapshot towards GNOME 3.24, due for release on March 22, 2017.

With a three-day delay, the GNOME 3.23.1 milestone is finally out for early adopters of the GNOME 3.24 desktop, whose development cycle just started a few weeks ago. Again, GNOME 3.23.1 is the first development snapshot, so you shouldn't expect to see any major changes, as it seems to us that only a few components have been updated.

Among these, we can mention the Evolution email and groupware client, GNOME Nibbles game, Epiphany web browser, which brings a lot of exciting new features, GNOME Maps, GNOME Logs, and GNOME Calculator (also a major release). Overall, the changes are fairly small, and you can read the APPS NEWS and CORE NEWS changelogs for more details.

"Sorry for the delay in the release but it has been a little more bumpy than normal; mostly for the transition of some modules to the new meson build system. We have already contacted the maintainers so we are sure it will be much smoother in the next releases," said Javier Jardón in the email announcement.

GNOME 3.23.2 arrives November 23 with more goodies

As mentioned before, the development cycle of the GNOME 3.24 desktop environment has just begun. There will be three more such snapshots before it enters the Beta stages of development, and the next one, GNOME 3.23.2, is slated for release in three weeks from today, on November 23, 2016, bringing more goodies to the table.

If you want to compile GNOME 3.23.1 on your GNU/Linux distribution, you'll have to use the jhbuild modulesets located at http://library.gnome.org/devel/jhbuild/ and http://download.gnome.org/teams/releng/3.23.1/. However, please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version, not suitable for everyday use.
