The official launch announcement for Firefox 44.0 has finally landed, and it details the changes and improvements that have landed in this latest release.

A new Firefox is out and ready for download, and users can prepare for quite a few new features. It's not an amazing release, but we already knew that from the Beta notes that were published in December. Still, some of the changes made are interesting nonetheless, so we'll take a closer look at those.

Mozilla has a big problem with Firefox, which is losing users every day to other Internet browsers. Even if the market seems saturated with the current offering of browsers, new ones are still being proposed. Older browsers are making serious changes to their designs and overall strategy, but Firefox seems to be somewhat stuck in time. Sure, Firefox has some nice features that other browsers don't share, but Mozilla doesn't seem to capitalize on them.

Firefox 44.0 has arrived, here's what's new

According to the official changelog posted today, the warning pages for certificate errors and untrusted connections have been improved, H.264 is now enabled if the decoder is available on the system, WebM/VP9 video support is now enabled by default on systems that don't support MP4/H.264, the brotli compression format is now provided via HTTPS content-encoding, and screenshot commands allow user choice of pixel ratio in Developer Tools.

Also, the support for the RC4 decipher has been removed, the validation of web fonts is now much more secure, the Equifax Secure Certificate Authority 1024-bit root certificate or the UTN - DATACorp SGC are no longer trusted, and a number of changes strictly for developers have been implemented as well.

As usual, you can download Firefox 44 for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X from Softpedia. Please keep in mind that the Linux version is just a binary, and it's not installable unless you want to compile your own. Firefox 44 will soon land in all the big repositories.
