Canonical has just announced that the latest Firefox 44.0.1 is now in the official repositories for users of Ubuntu 15.10, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

The Ubuntu maintainers of Firefox have been quick to push the new version into the repositories in less than a day. They moved pretty fast and now Ubuntu users can benefit from the changes and improvements that have been implemented.

In the past few months, the Ubuntu maintainers didn't wait around too long to push the latest version of Firefox in the repos, and they have kept this habit. Long gone are the days when Ubuntu users had to wait for days before the upgrade was made available.

Firefox 44.0.1 has landed

The launch of Firefox 44.0.1 was detailed yesterday, but since this is a maintenance upgrade, not much has changed. Nonetheless, some of the fixes are important and they include one for graphics startup crash under Linux.

"USN-2880-1 fixed vulnerabilities in Firefox. This update introduced a regression which caused Firefox to crash on startup with some configurations. This update fixes the problem," reads the security notice.

This is just a regression that was revealed in this release. More details about the issues that have been identified in the Firefox browser can be found in the security notice. Ubuntu users need to upgrade as soon as possible. This can be done in a couple of ways, either with the dedicated upgrade tool or by using the terminal.

If you decide to use the terminal, these are the commands you have to enter (root is required):

code
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
You can also download the latest Firefox 44.0.1 from Softpedia and run it that way, without having to install it. Please keep in mind that you can't install this downloadable version unless you count compiling the source as installing.
